I know their features, but would like to hear a comparison of performance from anyone who has used one or, preferably, both. In particular, issues about wandering while stationary / moving slowly, reception under cover / indoors, click-stick versus rocker-pad, and SIRFstar III versus Mediatek chipsets. Thanks for your help!
Thanks for the responses so far. There are things I like about both, so I appreciate hearing from people who own them.
I will confuse things by recommending the Vista HCx. I had an earlier black and white vista and bought an HCx last fall.
The quality of the reception floored me. It not only gets a lock in my kitchen, it can get signals in my office in the middle of an industrial building. I can wear it on a belt clip and get tracks with only a rare drop out.
The x series has the feature that you can continiously write your tracks to the memory card without the 10000 point limit. I have to work on my tracks from last week which I spent hiking in the Boulder CO area. I have already turned other tracks into maps via Google Map and this time I will be working on geocoding the photos to the tracks.
The etrex also works well as a car unit. It doesn’t use a voice to announce turns but it has a (selectable) sound that gives you about a 45 second warning of the turn and another when you are at the turn, along with the typical view of the turn.
The click stik take a little practice and I still sometimes click it when moving it to a side but it gets less common as you use it and it does operate well with the thumb.
A lot depends on if you want a unit with a larger screen or a lighter weight.
